A dental filling: What should you know? When should this treatment be performed?

Dental fillings

If a tooth develops caries (a cavity), the tooth must be cleaned and plugged. Dental fillings are necessary to prevent tooth decay from becoming more severe and maintain the teeth’ health. Otherwise, caries may reach the pulp of the tooth, requiring a complex root canal procedure.

Putting a filling in a tooth

In order to complete dental fillings, the dentist first removes the inflammatory substance created in the tooth, i.e., caries itself, and then places the filling (restoration of the tooth). By filling the hole created in the tooth, the filling restores the tooth’s appearance and originality, as well as its perfect function.

Two main types of materials are used to perform dental fillings:

  • The first material is an amalgam – a metallic material that consists of an alloy of several metals. As a durable material, amalgam can be used to make fillings that last many years.

  • The second material is a plastic composite that matches the tooth’s color.

What is the best material for each type of tooth filling?

An amalgam filling is preferred when filling a rear tooth, which is not visible to the eye since amalgam is stronger, more stable, and more durable.

It is preferable to use composite filling material for fillings in front teeth or in prominent places in the teeth so that the aesthetics of the mouth are not harmed and the teeth remain white.

Composite fillings are slightly more complex than amalgam fillings. In addition to cleaning the tooth of carious material, it is necessary to grind it with acid, apply a bonding layer, and then fill the hole with composite. Direct light is then directed at the composite, causing it to harden.

Is it necessary to renew a filling at certain intervals?

It is not guaranteed that filling the teeth will prevent caries from developing in other parts of the tooth or even in the margins of the filling. Whenever further caries develop adjacent to the filling, the existing filling must be removed and replaced with a new one.

After several years, fillings can also fall out, which requires re-filling. Falling fillings are sometimes an indication of deeper caries forming.

3 ways to prevent dental decay

  • Eat healthy food – sugary foods damage the teeth and cause decay.

  • Make sure you get a check-up every six months – when caries is first detected, there is no pain, and only when it has advanced does sensitivity to touch appear, especially when eating cold and hot food. In the later stages, a dark spot can be seen. In the early stages of caries, the dentist will be able to identify and treat it.

  • Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day or more with fluoride toothpaste.
